Students who Surprise Us; Reimagining Conceptions of Children at the Intersection of Disability and Mathematics

In this talk, Dr. Lambert will share data from her studies of neurodiverse adolescents in their mathematics classrooms, including how these students’ mathematical abilities were perceived by teachers and by themselves.  Framing her talk as about students with mathematical difficulties who “surprise” their teachers, Dr. Lambert will explore how our field constructs students through deficit models, the impact on individual students and teachers, and the role of pedagogy in how students are constructed as mathematically able, or not.
